Dressage

My program emphasizes true engagement and responsiveness, with a goal of self-carriage, balance and suppleness. Gymnastic exercises are used to enhance the horse-rider relationship while strengthening and educating the horse. Horses at every level may get trail or ground work days to prevent burnout and fatigue, keep the work fresh, to improve suppleness and develop quiet, confident horses.

I draw from several schools of thought, recognizing that a variety of methods have their useful time and place. I gently challenge my horses, and correct naughty behavior, while never compromising the physical and mental well-being of the horse.

Importantly, I listen to the horse, respecting their feedback and responding appropriately. Issues with nutrition, back pain, soundness, saddle fit, bridle fit, dentistry and hoof are addressed with professionalism and sensitivity. Horses often have good reasons for their behavior, and I look to all avenues for solutions.

Priorities are:

  • Forwardness, straightness, and through-ness
  • Lateral responsiveness and education
  • Conditioning and strength for self carriage
  • Developing and preserving a good attitude and work ethic
  • Mindfulness of conformational and/or soundness issues and maintenance
  • Bringing horses through the levels with tact and leadership
